The Wall Street Journal
Thanks to Garry for pointing out to me that the Wall Street Journal’s web site is already (secretly) free.

It’s about time I caught up with slang of the 1930s. I’m surprised so many are still used today, although not as commonly as then. A phone call should still be termed dil-ya-ble.

You’re probably already aware of the 10 accidental inventions from this article, but they might still be worth revisiting.

If you’re at all interested in the protests against The Church of Scientology (not the religion mind you) happening tomorrow (today? well the 10th anyways) here are some links of interest:
Something Awful Protest Report Thread
Twitter: The Perth Raid (one of the first protests due to the time zone). Nothing is there as of this writing, but I expect good things.
Anonymous vs. Scientology (Part Deux!). The first Something Awful thread on the subject reached 200 pages and then this was opened. Talk of live protests start around the page linked here. You can also start at the beginning and spend the day there if you like.
Post-Game. A forum on Enturbulation for after/during the protest reports.

This collection of videos surrounding the death of John F. Kennedy is a great find if you’ve never seen them. The Dallas Tapes has an interview with Oswald’s wife that I’ve never seen among others.

Without beating anyone over the head, two sites I’ve spent a decent amount of time on lately are Enturbulation.org and You Found the Card. Both are anti-Church of Scientology (not the actual religion of Scientology) and are definitely worth a look if you’re even remotely interested in seeing what the Church has been up to over the past 50 years. Now with this my Scientology-related posts will cease before people start fleeing my website in terror. Unless something really cool happens on February 10th.

Pardon the lack of updates this week. I’m back though, really!
The Government Attic has some great documents released via the freedom of information act. The FCC complaints make for scary and interesting reading.

Think or Thwim has lots of good finds to peruse. This post comparing the US and Mexico border in 1898 and 2008 is a must see.

Relive moments in history using animated maps. Quite neat.

Learn a bit about some of your favorites in the Color In Motion online exhibit. Damn you purple and your aloof, arrogant, conflictive and cruel self.

From Cracked: Five Popular Brands the Nazis Gave Us. An interesting (if not safe for work due to language) read on companies that had involvement with the Nazis during World War II. I’ve read a bit on all of these, but the IBM one in particular was interesting.

Read a bit about the history of video game consoles, from the beginning to the current ones. I always wanted a Vectrex.

As the undead can arrive at any time, it’s best to visit the Zombie Preparedness Initiative now.

The History and Geography of Inventions is a great place to get lost in if the subject interests you. For example, did you know the escalator was invented in 1891? Neither did I.

The NYT has an interesting read on the J.F.K. assassination, and shares an opinion I hadn’t heard before.

Not a Cough in a Carload, “Images from the Tobacco Industry Campaign to Hide the Hazards of Smoking”. Quite interesting and in a well done format. Some great ad scans in there.

The Free Dictionary is a lot like Wikipedia, but it’s nice to have options.

This guy has pictures of 455 different energy drink cans, of which I have tried none. Am I missing something by ignoring this obviously busy market? Not safe for work if some naughty language is an issue.
